To improve the students’ listening comprehension, there have been many types of classroom activities and techniques, one of which is providing the students with pre-listening activities. But since such activities – pre-listening activities -- do not usually occur in real life situations and one of the aims of language classes is to prepare students to use language in real life contexts and situations, it has been decided to do a research to see if such activities will help have better listeners in real life situations or not. The design of the study was True Experimental and it was conducted on 60 intermediate male Iranian EFL learners at Iran Language Institute, with 30 students in each group – experimental and control groups. An already validated and reliable test (PET) was given to the students to have homogeneous ones, and the scores of this test were kept to be compared with those of the posttest at the end of the training course in which the students in the experimental group had pre-listening communicative activities whenever they were taught something new e.g. a dialog, a passage or a listening practice while the students in the control group didn t. But both groups were presented post-listening activities. The students were given four listening tests in two-week intervals. These scores were also recorded for the final computations. At the end, a posttest in the form of real-life-LIKE situations was given to the students. The means of the pre-test, the means of the tests during the term, and that of the post-test between the two groups were compared through Repeated Measures at the .05 level of significance. After all these computations, it was revealed that pre-listening communicative activitiesdidn t help the students in the experimental group very much and they couldn t surpass the students in the control group. So the null hypothesis made at the beginning of the study could not be rejected. Since the listening ability of the students in the experimental group of this study couldn t be improved by these activities comparing with that of the students in the control group, it seems wise to look for other ways to aid students be better listeners where they have to use language normally in real life situations.
